Puerto Escondido - Settling In

We have settled into the slow rhythms of Puerto Escondido life very successfully.  The mornings usually involve drinking coffee, catching up on the news via the Internet, and some exercise.  Deborah has joined sister Rita in daily Tai Chi and Water Aerobics while I stay at the condo to occasionally stretch something.  The big questions to be answered each day are whether it is a beach day (and then which one of five in the immediate vicinity) or pool day, and then the big ones, whether lunch and dinner are at-home or out, and if out, which of the many restaurants to choose, and finally where the sunset drinks will best be consumed.  The evenings are spent wandering the town in search of live music or staying in for even more drinks.

We have rented a furnished condo near the beach for the month.  We are the first renters and everything is brand new.  Even the towels are shedding their fluff for the first time.  We have gone to the market to pick up a few missing essentials (a cork screw being number one) but most everything else is on site.  Anita is our personal helper who comes in each day to clean, make the bed and do the laundry if required.  I still do the dishes but I am sure Anita would take care of them if I left them.  Laudio is our on-site helper who is a jack-of-all-trades.  Laudio is known to reorient your lounger when it is time to turn over while sun bathing.  Lupita is the manager and lives in-house to ensure Anita and Laudio are on task.  Our neighbours are Bub and Cheryl, sister Rita’s friends from Port Alberni.

Our Neighbourhood

Puerto Escondido has been a winter home for sister Rita and brother-in-law Mike for the last eighteen years.  There is little Rita does not know about the area and is eager to share the wonders of this little area they believe to be the most special in Mexico.  We have been introduced to their large circle of friends from across Canada and the US, all of which are very friendly and make this place their winter retreat.

Cousin Randy and Doreen arrived in PE for their first time last Friday.  It takes some effort to get here.  Most flights leaving Vancouver or Seattle have at least one stop before arriving in Mexico City in the early morning and everyone must wait for a connecting flight to PE.  Randy and Doreen were like most new arrivals, dead tired, but troopers that they are, we were off for a sunset, drinks and dinner overlooking Carrazililo Beach.  By the time the first evening concluded we managed to find a Blues Bar on Zicatela before they both crashed for the night.  By the end of the second day Randy was able to sit in for a missing Blues drummer at another bar (the Split Coconut) and by the end of the set, was offered a paid gig at the Split.  He makes his debut this Thursday for a three-hour set.

We enjoyed Seattle’s first Super Bowl win at a party hosted by Rita’s friend Yvonne.  While the game was dull, the food and view from the deck was awe-inspiring.

We are off the beach.  We will write when there is something new to report.
