Second Week Escondido

We became a little more active during final week in Puerto Escondido.  Our new morning walking regime remained intact but we added a few different beach visits to our repertoire as well as more fine dining in the evening.

Carrazilillo Beach

This was our fifth visit to P.E.  All of our stays were between 2 weeks and a month.  We have usually spent the bulk of our days at Carrizalillo Beach, just steps away from our various rental haunts in the Bococho neighborhood.  On this trip we ignored Carrizalillo completely.

Carrizalillo Beach has changed.  It is still very picturesque but has become too popular.  With the increase of numbers, came an increase in garbage and competition for space both in the water and the sand.  The water simply does not have the same clean look and smell compared to nearby beaches.  For those reasons, not the 140 step stairs it takes to get up and down, we joined sister Rita and Mike at other beaches or simply enjoyed pool time at our Zandoyo B&B.

We took a taxi ride to Zicatella.  Zicatela is on the southeastern end of P.E.  It is a surf beach where the large waves precludes us from entering the water.  It is a great place to sip a cold one and have lunch while wave watching.

We also visited Playa Angelito & Manzanillo, a short walk over from Carrizalillo.   They are not quite as large but offer a greater beach dining experience and the rocks just off the beach are great for snorkeling.  Don Pablo’s offers shaded beach chairs and great meals.  Beach beers are 30 pesos (about $2.50 cdn).

We also took a drive around 30 kms west to Roca Blanca.  There are kilometres of white sandy beaches with very few humans in sight.  The seas are a little rough but no undertows and body surfing is possible.  Lulu’s palapa is the restaurant of choice.  Her husband goes out in the morning with his spear gun and the “fish of the day” is his daily catch.

We also drove east of Puerto 60 kms to San Agustinillo.  Great beach a little busier than Roca Blanca but with great waves to play in and good food on the beach.

We didn't just go to the beach to eat.  In the evenings we enjoyed the numerous first class eateries Puerto Escondido has to offer.

We also took in a few sights while walking.  Sadly our favourite Rock Walk to Playa Principal has been washed away by the storms.  We made it about half way before turning back.
